A place to learn
School fees paid, so children can focus on learning and taking their next step.
For us, it starts with a child. A chance to learn.
And a community that believes in what comes next.
The year our story began
Children supported in education
Community. Countless possibilities.
Small acts of support.
A lifetime of possibility.
Our story connects Zambezi, Zambia, with Westendorp, the Netherlands.
Miriam Nguvu and Bennie Vreman, together with their five children, founded Tangenu in 2001. On visits to Miriam’s birthplace, the family saw friends and relatives lost to HIV/AIDS — and children left behind.
They wanted to help those children build a future of their own. That personal commitment still guides everything we do: opening doors to education, independence and opportunity.
How that belief becomes actionOpportunity starts with the essentials.
We help remove the everyday barriers
that stand between a child and school.
School fees paid, so children can focus on learning and taking their next step.
School uniforms that help children arrive prepared and feel part of their school community.
Books and stationery. The simple things that turn a blank page into a new beginning.
Mentorship and encouragement to help children see a future they can build for themselves.
In 2010, we began building a school in Kamona. Reaching this remote community meant taking materials by truck, crossing the river by vehicle pontoon at Chinyingi, then travelling the last ten kilometres by oxcart.
A donated tractor transformed that journey. And through the foundation’s support, the community school became a government school — a lasting place for learning to grow.
At Chinyingi, vehicles and materials cross by pontoon. A separate suspension bridge provides a crossing for people on foot.
The school is around 1,150 km from Lusaka. Its remote location made sourcing and transporting building materials a challenge from the very beginning.
With special thanks to Rob Kouwen, whose fundraising made a difference, and Dolf Sloetjes, whose donation of a tractor helped move the project forward. We remember Rob with gratitude.
